Engineers, social scientists, and educators continue to examine the potential reasons for this underrepresentation and to propose interventions. Previous SWE reviews of the literature on women in engineering have revealed that there is no consensus as to how to explain the low numbers of women in engineering and the frustrating reality that progress toward gender equity has slowed. We read close to peer-reviewed articles, books, and papers presented at major conferences on various aspects of gender inequality in engineering and STEM more generally.
