Two views on the nature of emotion exist amongst researchers, psychologists, and neurologists. One is that emotions are universal, the same in every culture, and do not change with time. The other, on the contrary, supposes that emotion is culturally specific—volatile and closely related to language and the symbolic codes of society in which it exists. The history of emotion is developing in line with the latter view. The history of emotion is a 20th century invention. Two trends can be distinguished within modern studies—political and institutional.

As part of our first anniversary at the History of Emotions blog, I asked members and friends of the Centre for the History of the Emotions to write a paragraph or two on what they thought about the history of emotions, how they got involved in it, why it mattered, and what were their favourite publications in the field. The dozen answers below range widely. Several are by PhD students here at Queen Mary, others are by established academics. Recurring themes include the relationship between scientific and humanistic attempts to get to grips with human mental life.
