In the previous tutorial, we have seen about Band Pass Filter , a circuit which allows a certain band of frequencies of the signal to pass. In this tutorial, we will learn about Band Stop Filter, a filter with exact opposite functionality of a Band Pass Filter. A Band Pass or Band Reject Filter stops or attenuates a band of frequencies while the frequencies outside this range are passed. The attenuated frequencies range is known as Stop Band. The band stop filter is formed by the combination of low pass and high pass filters with a parallel connection instead of cascading connection. The name itself indicates that it will stop a particular band of frequencies.

The bandstop filter provides the dual function of the bandpass filter and is designed to reject a specified range of frequencies while passing all others. This type of filter often finds applications in receiving systems where it may be necessary to attenuate one or more strong signals in a hostile electronic environment, for example, a radar which illuminates the receiving antenna. Another application that sometimes requires a bandstop filter is the removal of the LO frequency from a receiver mixer, which may be required in the IF section or to ensure that no signals are emitted from the receiving antenna. Similar to the lumped-component bandpass filter, the bandstop filter consists of resonators with a center frequency that is the geometric mean of the two bandedges.
There are different types of filters like High pass filter , low pass filter, bandpass filter, and bandstop filter. High pass filter will only allow frequencies which are higher than cut off frequency and low pass filter allows the frequencies which are lower than cut off frequencies. The bandpass filter will allow a particular band of frequencies and a band stop filter will reject a particular band of frequencies.
