I remember being 5 years old in a gymnastics class looking at the other girls and comparing myself. I saw them happy and loving life and I wanted that. But I felt that my body had to be a certain way to feel that way. The eating disorder thoughts started back at that age. As I got older, with gymnastics as my life, the thoughts just progressed. By age 10 I began restricting my diet, looking up things online on how to lose weight, and began drinking coffee.

Eating disorders range from anorexia and bulimia to taking laxatives and restricting what you eat. There are multiple causes of eating disorders. Biological factors and social media can cause a person to have an eating disorder.

Eating Disorders In Teenagers

The rise of eating disorders, the constant portrayal of what is the perfect body image, and the unattainable beauty advertised, clearly shows that the media contributes to the incidence of eating disorders. Studies have shown the more television is introduced into a society, the more cases of eating disorders. Research has shown that a region isolated from the media can quickly become violated as television advertisements are introduced. Prior to television, women were not criticized or looked down upon for carrying extra weight.
These disorders can be life threatening and affect one physically and mentally. Society needs to regulate the mass media puts out, including images, videos and advertisements. The influence the mass media has on eating disorders cannot be ignored. Disorders such as bulimia and anorexia nervosa are developed at an alarming young age because the media spews images and videos with a message that in order to have a joyous and successful life, one must be lean.
